Retrieval of Rice Phenology by Means of Copolar Dual-pol Images Provided by Terrasar-x

چکیده

The polarimetric behaviour of rice fields at different phenological stages has been analysed by using time series of TerraSAR-X images. These are X-band copolar dual-pol images available for the whole growth cycle. As plants grow, changes in their morphology produce clear signatures in various polarimetric observables. Based on this sensitivity to phenology, a physically based retrieval approach is designed to estimate the phenological stage of rice fields from a single acquisition. Despite the simplicity of the algorithm, our tests have demonstrated its usefulness for identifying some specific phenological phases of interest for planning and triggering practices by the rice farmers.
